RSMA Trust

The Royal School of Mines Association Trust (registered charity no. 1015809) was established in 1992 to undertake the student funding objectives of the RSMA. The majority of the Trust's finance comes from the Association and the Trust is managed by a Board of Directors appointed annually by the Association. The Board comprises senior academic staff, students and alumni.

Loans

Interest free loans are available to students in cases of particular hardship. The maximum amount is £1,000 and a formal agreement is required as is a guarantor. Interest may be charged if the agreed repayment date is exceeded. Full details are available from the Chapter Office, Room B326, Bessemer Building.

Grants

The Trustees, for the alleviation of financial hardship, may award grants up to £200 at their discretion. Full details are available from the Chapter Office, Room B326, Bessemer Building.

UROP bursaries

Up to two bursaries may be available to undergraduate students from the Materials and Earth Sciences Departments to support research work to be carried out in one of these departments under the UROP scheme (Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme). The awards are up to a maximum of £80 per week for a period up to 10 weeks. Interested applicants should contact the Chapter Office, Room B326, Bessemer Building.

The UROP scheme is only open to undergraduate students.

Essay competition

The Royal School of Mines Association and The Royal School of Mines Association Trust instituted in 1999 a new silver medal which, together with a cash prize of £200, is awarded  annually for the best essay submitted.

The competition is for the best essay of under 2,000 words which relates environmental issues with any earth science, earth engineering, or materials subject taught in the Faculty of Engineering and it is open to any student of the Faculty, i.e. all undergraduates of any year, and all postgraduates currently studying for higher degrees.
